VERY RARE edit. Antique Book 1814 The Seasons by James Thomson prefixed by a life of the author by Samuel Johnson. Published by W.B. Allen & Co. Newburyport in 1814. Measures 2.5" X 4.5". Brown cloth over boards with paste on title page (that shows some wear, please see photos) and paste on rear cover of advertisements for the printer. A surprisingly sturdy little book. Book cloth was not used as a covering material until the 1830s, meaning the brown cloth over the spine of this volume is likely a later repair rather than the original binding structure. This is also suggested by the fact that the printing on the front and back boards is cut short on the spine edge and the cloth goes over the paper paste down on the inside of the covers, rather than underneath it, as the printed paper covering does. It's wonderful to think about the care a previous owner took in repairing this book so that they could continue to use it, but it probably would've had full paper covering or a thin leather spine strip originally.
